What is Day of the Dead?

It’s a cultural celebration that started back in the 1950s as a way for Mexican Americans in parts of Texas and California commemorate their dead relatives with crosses, altars, and celebrations. It’s also closely linked with religion because most Mexicans believe that in order for someone to leave purgatory and go into heaven, loved ones need to visit them on November 2nd – November 30th as a sign that they still remember them. The calavera catrina embodies this sentiment beautifully because it looks like she’s laughing at death.
